Why is Kilimanjaro not “just for super athletes”? How Any Motivated Person Can Reach the Summit.

Many people think you need to be a marathon runner or an experienced mountaineer. That’s not true.  

The intensity is medium to high, but the secret is not in brute strength, it’s in adaptation. Our longer route gives you time for your body to get used to the altitude, step by step (“pole pole” as the local guides say). It’s not a technically difficult path, but it requires mental resilience and smart preparation.  

Real success rate on our 9-day route? Much higher than the average of shorter routes (which stays at 65-70%). With 24/7 accompaniment, good food at the camps and progressive acclimatization, most normal, active and motivated people succeed. We have seen people over 50, couples who had never camped and solo travelers reach the summit with tears in their eyes.  

This can be the challenge that makes you feel alive again.  


Our Philosophy on the 9-Day Lemosho Route 

We always choose and recommend Lemosho because it starts on the west side, less crowded, with incredible landscapes from the first day:

dense tropical forest → Shira plateau → alpine deserts → glaciers.  


Advantages of our longer version:  

  • More days of acclimatization (crucial above 4,000m).  

  • “Pole pole” walks, slowly slowly.  

  • The two of us always present, monitoring each person.  

  • Hot food prepared at the camps by the local team (it’s not freeze-dried dry, it’s a comforting homemade African meal).  

  • Nights in comfortable tents + quality sleeping bags.  

  • Active acclimatization (short extra hikes on key days). 

The summit is not the only goal. The whole path is the reward: seeing the sunrise over Africa, the silence of the alpine desert, the camaraderie of the small group.  


Physical and Mental Preparation: What Really Works 

Recommended training (12-16 weeks before):  

  • Ups and downs (stairs, local mountains).  

  • Cardio + strength (legs, core and back).  

  • Weighted training: simulates summit day (lots of clothes + water). 

Our personal tip: train your mind too. Do hikes in bad weather or when you’re tired. On Kilimanjaro, the hardest moment is not the strength, it’s when the altitude makes you doubt at 3am on the way to the summit.  


Altitude sickness:

Affects 75% of people above 3,000m. It does not depend on physical fitness. It depends on slow pace, hydration and acclimatization. On our route, we monitor oxygen saturation every day and adjust.  


What to Bring to Kilimanjaro – Practical List Tested by Us 

Day backpack (30-40L): what you carry with you every day. Large duffel bag: you leave with the porters (max. 15kg).  


Clothing – Layering System (essential!)  

  • Base layer: 2-3 merino thermal t-shirts (they don’t smell and keep you warm even when wet).  

  • Mid layer: Fleece or warm polar.  

  • Outer layer: Waterproof and windproof jacket (Gore-Tex type).  

  • For the summit: Quality down jacket + waterproof trousers.  

  • Footwear: Well broken-in trekking boots (waterproof) + 2 pairs of camp boots (super important!).  

  • Accessories: Thin gloves + thick gloves, beanie, buff, category 4 sunglasses, trekking poles. 


Other essentials (don’t skip these)  

  • Comfortable sleeping bag (-10°C or better).  

  • Headlamp with extra batteries (crucial for the night summit).  

  • Water bottle + Camelbak (constant hydration).  

  • Personal energy snacks (nuts, bars, chocolates — our team provides meals, but you want your favorites).  

  • Personal first aid kit + Diamox (if your doctor recommends).  

  • SPF50 sunscreen, lip balm, wet wipes, toilet paper.  

  • Power bank + adapters. 


Our tip: less is more. We’ve seen people suffer from carrying too much weight. Trust our list, tested on several expeditions.  


A Typical Day on Our Expedition (Personal Touch) 

Waking up to hot coffee, pole pole walk, set-up tents, hot meals. Stops for photos, explanations about flora and fauna. Afternoon of acclimatization or rest. Group dinner, laughs, stories. And the two of us always available to talk, adjust rhythms or simply give a hug when the day was hard.
